Jupiter Enters Cancer - 9th June 2025

Today, Jupiter, the planet associated with expansion and good luck, moves from Gemini into Cancer.

Jupiter takes roughly 12 months to move through a sign, so its transits indicate where your focus will be for the year ahead. When Jupiter was in Gemini, we focused on ideas and communication. Was it a coincidence that AI was suddenly everywhere last year? Jupiter in Cancer sees us turning inward — how does the knowledge we gained in the past year make us feel?

In medical astrology, Gemini governs the lungs and, to me, reflecting on how the lungs operate is a metaphor for how Gemini functions. It is constantly inhaling and exhaling, taking things in and then releasing them. Not really reflecting on the content, as the priority is to be in constant motion. Cancer, however, rules the stomach, and that is where we actually start to absorb nutrients – or toxins — into our bodies. So another way of looking at this transit is, what have we taken in that can now become a part of us?

Cancer's association with sensitivity stems, in part, from this. If you're really affected by your environment, if you feel other people's emotions as your own, for instance, you're not going to want to be around things or people that are distressing. You're going to want a calm, curated environment where you feel safe. I feel like Cancer is the ultimate sign of the highly sensitive person.

There's another side to Cancer, though. It is a cardinal sign, those signs that herald the start of seasons as they fall on the equinoxes and solstices. Cardinal signs are generative — they are here to create. Hence the association of Cancer with the mother, and also the artist. Because it is so attuned to its surroundings, it is uniquely able to recognise and define the nuances of human experiences and turn them into something beautiful. A painting, or a poem. Or even (as Cancer has a strong association with food and cooking), taking a bunch of disparate ingredients and combining them into something delicious.

Jupiter in Cancer will provide a nice antitode to all the masculine air and fire outer planet energy that is circulating at the moment.

This energy is beneficial for beautifying our homes, or purchasing real estate to set down or strengthen our roots in an area. It's great for connecting with family and close friends, processing our emotions, and strengthening our intuition.

There's a lot of noise around currently and Jupiter in Cancer reminds us that sometimes we need a sanctuary to retreat into, whether it be a bricks-and-mortar building or a safe space within our own bodies and minds.

The only word of caution here, however, is that Jupiter can tend to overdo things, so we need to be mindful of the difference between cocooning for rest and reflection, and isolation. Cancer is also association with tribal behaviour —families and nations — so there may be an increase in patriotism and the need (real or imagined) to defend our sanctuary from the ‘Other’.

Ultimately, though, Jupiter is considered to be ‘exalted’ (think, treated as a celebrated guest) in Cancer, as its expansive nature compliments Cancer's quiet fecundity and deep drive to provide abundance. It's a lovely placement for cozy-ing up in a soft blanket (in our Australian winter), baking some delicious treats to share, and getting out our watercolour paints.
